Virginia Chu received her Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering in 1989 from Princeton University. Her thesis was entitled “Schottky barriers on amorphous silicon and amorphous silicon-germanium alloys” and presented a study of minority carrier transport in Schottky barrier devices. Following her degree, she was a post-doctoral fellow at LPICM, Ecole Polytechnique, Palaiseau, France, where she worked with in-situ ellipsometry for interface studies of compositional multilayer structures involving amorphous semiconductors. Since 1990, she has been part of the Research Staff of INESC (now INESC MN) where she is a co-responsible of the thin film MEMS research group and co-director of INESC Microsistemas e Nanotecnologias. Her present research interests include thin film microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) for sensors and actuators, thin film transistors for large area electronics applications, electronics on plastic substrates and integration of thin film technology to biological applications.
