Compiled by Stanford University and published by Elsevier, the World’s Top 2% Scientists list identifies the most influential scientists worldwide based on citation data from the Scopus database. The 2025 edition (referring to 2024 data) analyses more than 200,000 researchers across 22 scientific fields and 176 subfields. It provides percentile rankings for all scholars with at least five published papers and includes two datasets — one reflecting career-long scientific impact (up to the end of 2024) and another focused on citations received during 2024.

INESC MN is among the World’s Top 2% list, with Paulo Freitas, José Luís Martins, and Marco Piccardo recognised as some of the most influential researchers in their respective fields: Applied Physics (P. Freitas, J. L. Martins) and Optoelectronics & Photonics (M. Piccardo).
