In 2022, researchers involved in the ISTSat-1 project headed the creation of the IST NanosatLab in Taguspark. This consortium, led by INESC ID and including IT, IDMEC, ISR – Instituto de Sistemas e Robótica, INESC MN, INOV, and Instituto Superior Técnico, served as the site for the final integration of the ISTSat-1, setting the stage for future satellite technology development projects.
ISTSat-1 is the first university nanosatellite fully developed and manufactured in Portugal. It was launched on July 9th at the European space base in Kourou, French Guiana, aboard an Ariane 6 rocket. The ISTSat-1 project marks a significant milestone, as the Ariane 6, developed over nearly a decade, aims to bolster Europe’s capability to launch satellites and secure its access to space.
The assembly of ISTSat-1 took place in the cleanroom at INESC MN. In this controlled environment, various tests were conducted to validate its functionality, including testing photovoltaic cells essential for energy collection during its mission.
